From July to Mid-October, the Sunshine Coast is front and centre on the humpback highway—and Crusader 1 offers the most personal, uncrowded way to see it.
It’s That Time Again—And It’s Absolutely Magic
Each winter, thousands of humpback whales cruise right past our coastline on their annual migration—and there’s no better place to see them than right here, aboard Crusader 1 with Sunshine Coast Afloat.
From early July through to mid-October, the ocean comes alive with breaching adults, playful calves, and curious pods that often swim close to the boat. It’s a moving, unforgettable experience, and for us locals—whether you’re from Brisbane, Toowoomba, or just down the road in Mooloolaba—it’s one of the great natural privileges of living here.
As Visit Sunshine Coast explains, this stretch of coastline sits on the “humpback highway,” offering some of the most consistent and spectacular whale sightings in Australia.
Season Snapshot: July to Mid-October, But Don’t Wait
While the season officially runs for months, the best whale encounters often happen from mid-July to mid-September. That’s when the action really heats up—with pods breaching, slapping their tails, and sometimes even spy-hopping just metres from your spot on deck.
And here’s the kicker: we only take a limited number of guests per trip. That means no jostling at the rail, no shouting to be heard over the crowd—just space to breathe, enjoy, and take in the magic of it all.
We don’t cram people on board. We focus on quality—space, comfort, connection—and let the whales do the talking.
Why Crusader 1 is Different
When you book with Sunshine Coast Afloat, you’re choosing a premium small-group experience on a locally owned and operated vessel. Crusader 1 is a former offshore commercial boat, now beautifully reconfigured for up-close encounters and smooth cruising. With shaded seating, clean amenities, and easy access, it’s the perfect platform for whale watching.
And we do things differently:
- Smaller groups (no busloads or sardine-style seating)
- Locals’ insight and live commentary from real crew, not a recording
- Flexible departures from Tank Riveria Pontoon
- Eco-conscious practices to respect the whales and their migration
